Housing plan on Sheffield restaurant site in line for approval

The demolition and redevelopment of Baldwins Omega, on Brincliffe Hill, is recommended for approval at a Sheffield Council planning committee meeting on Tuesday.

When outline plans for the scheme were submitted on behalf of owner David Baldwin last year, permission was sought for 38 homes, in a mixture of flats and detached houses.

However, following concerns raised by planning officers over the layout of the development, the ‘exact number’ of properties is now ‘not specified’, a report to the meeting says.

This will ‘enable negotiation’ at a later stage, but the eventual number of properties will likely be ‘not dissimilar’ to the original figure, the report adds. Nearly 30 representations from residents were received by the council, 23 of whom objected.

Worries mainly focused on traffic and parking, and the planned entrance for cars from Chelsea Court. Some objectors said the plans were an ‘overdevelopment’ of the site. But officers said: “A detailed scheme based on this outline proposal could achieve significant benefits in terms of housing provision.”

Mr Baldwin wants a five-year timescale for development to start.
