Hospital ceremony celebrates dedication of volunteer team

THE unsung heroes who give their time to help patients, relatives and staff at Barnsley Hospital were hailed at a ceremony.

More than 200 volunteers were thanked in an event at the hospital social club to honour their hard work and dedication.

Voluntary services manager Felicity Devine said: “The event was all about the hospital showing its appreciation for the fantastic efforts of our volunteers across the hospital.

“They are a real inspiration – giving their time to help patients, relatives and staff – and the evening was an opportunity for us to give something back.”

The event, hosted by the trust’s board of directors, had an added sparkle with its black and white theme.

Felicity added: “After the success of last year’s Hawaiian theme, which was very colourful and bright, it seemed the only way to go was to make it as simple as possible, black and white.”

Even the venue was fully decorated in black and white – complete with black and white flowers, food and table decorations.

Not only was the evening an opportunity to recognise all their volunteers for their commitment but some members of the team were also singled out for their long service.

After clocking up more than 170 years between them, 13 volunteers were presented with long service awards from Chairman Gordon Firth.
