Hopes of moving wheels

A PART of Askern's heritage could be taking pride of place in the heart of the town.

Town councillor Frank Jackson has started a campaign to get the town’s two pit wheels placed in a prominent position on the Lakeside.

The wheels currently reside behind Alexander House and at the Miners’ Welfare but Coun Jackson says they should be in a more high profile site.

He said: “Everywhere I go when I enter a mining village or town, their colliery wheels are on show to show they are proud of their heritage. But in Askern the two we have are hidden away.

“The one at the back of Alexander House no one ever sees, and the one at the welfare needs to be restored.

“I suggest that ideally they both be restored and moved to a much more suitable place.”

He added: “I think it’s important for the local community to be proud of our heritage.”
