Homes in Sheffield's Green Belt cast into doubt

The developer behind a controversial scheme of 88 homes in Sheffield's Green Belt has lodged an appeal against their obligation to offer affordable housing - warning the project could become '˜unviable'.

Sheffield Council approved the £10m plan for the old Dyson Refractories site in Stannington in January.

A condition was that developer Avant Homes should contribute £1.8m towards affordable housing in the area.

But now Avant wants a review of the requirement. In a letter, the firm’s agent said: “With the inclusion of any affordable housing element whatsoever this scheme is unviable and will not come forward.”

A report to councillors this week suggested the planning committee and residents had been ‘misled’. Officers will prepare a further report with a recommendation.
