Ten properties had to be evacuated over fears of an explosion in Barnsley.

Firefighters were called to a garage fire on Parma Rise, Darfield at about 8.45pm on Saturday.

The garage was well alight when crews arrived and there were fears that a gas pipe could explode.

An exclusion zone was set up and householders were not allowed back into their properties until emergency services and gas engineers had inspected the scene and found it to be safe.

The garage was completely destroyed by the blaze, which is believed to have started accidentally.

Firefighters were at the scene until around 12.30am.
