Medics tried to bring 52-year-old victim Karl Notley out of the induced coma so police could speak to him about the attack but he was said to be ‘unresponsive’.

Mr Notley was last night in a ‘critical but stable’ condition following the incident outside the British Heart Foundation shop in Printing Office Street on Wednesday.

A man has appeared in court and two others have been arrested and bailed in connection with the incident.

Daniel James Walker, aged 27, of Grange Road, Woodlands, has been charged with grievous bodily harm with intent and appeared at Doncaster Magistrates’ Court yesterday morning.

Mr Walker was dressed in a grey T-shirt and dark trousers, and spoke only to confirm his details during the 10-minute hearing at the court.

He was refused bail and was remanded in custody until his next appearance at Sheffield Crown Court on September 8.

The two other men, aged 30 and 32, were arrested yesterday on suspicion of assisting an offender and have been bailed pending further enquiries.

A police spokesman added: “A report was received at 4.05am on Wednesday that a man had been assaulted on printing Office Street in Doncaster Town Centre.

“The 52-year-old victim was taken to hospital where his condition is described as critical but stable.”

The area outside the British Heart Foundation shop in Printing Office Street was sealed off with police tape for most of the day on Wednesday as scenes of crime officers gathered evidence.

Scores of shocked residents took to Facebook to wish Mr Notley well.

Bev Hooton posted: “Bless him - hope and pray he recovers well and quickly. Hope the homeless man gets lots of care and support.”

Donna Marie Jowett posted: “Hope he recovers fast and he is given a home. No-one should be on the streets - it’s disgusting and vile what’s happened to him. Talk about hitting a man when he is at rock bottom.”
