Home opens doors to help ease plight of lonely old folk

A home in a Sheffield suburb is throwing its doors open to older people in the city who do not want to be alone for Christmas.

St James Smith House, on Marlborough Road, Broomhill, will be open to lonely older people from Christmas Eve until Saturday, January 4 offering food and accommodation.

It is offering free Christmas dinners and free overnight stays.

The gesture is part of the Abbeyfield Houses Coping at Christmas campaign, which was launched after the charity discovered there are 500,000 over 65s in the UK who spend Christmas Day on their own.
