Holmes, who spent 15 months in charge, will stay at the club as a player and remain in charge of the team until his replacement is appointed.

Rossington have lost their last seven games in all competitions and have not won in Division One since September 20.

The defeat to Ollerton left Main 18th in the table, three places and four points above the drop zone.

Holmes, who has scored more than 200 goals for the Oxford Street club, wrote on Facebook: “I believe in my time we have moved the club forwards into better times.

“I will remain as a player and hopefully get back to my goalscoring best and full fitness.”

Ollerton gained revenge for a 4-1 defeat to Rossington at Walesby Lane in September by winning by the same scoreline in the reverse fixture.

They established a 3-0 lead inside the opening 25 minutes. After three minutes Kyle Ludlow ran clear to score before he doubled the lead with a diving header on 21 minutes. Lewis Bingham then rounded Simon Dye moments later after latching onto a flick-on.

Main pulled one back on 67 minutes when Jack Johnson’s cross took a deflection and looped in.

However, it proved no more than a consolation effort and late on Bingham tapped in his second after Dye had spilled a shot.
