Historic items on display at the city's Harley Gallery

Masterpieces of The Portland Collection, assembled over 400 years by the Dukes of Portland, have been unveiled at the Harley Gallery in Sheffield.

Visitors to the collection will be able to see Michelangelo’s Madonna del Silenzio - which is on show for the first time in 50 years - the pearl earring worn by Charles I at his execution in 1649, the Portland Tiara by Cartier worn by Winifred, Duchess of Portland, George Stubbs painting of the 3rd Duke of Portland on horseback outside the stables of Welbeck and a display of extraordinary miniatures, selected by Sir Peter Blake.

William Parente, grandson of the 7th Duke of Portland, said: “These things are our history, charting the way people, places, tastes and society have changed over the centuries – everyone should be able to enjoy them.”
