Who needs gifts and cake when you can spend your birthday tackling a 420m swim, a 20k bike challenge and a tough seven kilometre fell race?
Financial planner Louise Oliver put the treats on hold as she marked her 48th birthday with notorious triathlon the Hathersage Hilly.
The event began at Hathersage outdoor pool and tested entrants’ endurance on two wheels and on foot through the spectacular hills of the Peak District.
And when the crowds heard Louise was spending her birthday raising money for Sheffield Cathedral’s Archer Project, they gave her a special surprise.
“My family and friends started to sing Happy Birthday as I was swimming and suddenly all the other people joined in, which was just the boost I needed!” she said.
Louise, of financial planners Taylor Oliver, has so far raised more than £700 for the Archer Project, the day centre that supports the homeless and the vulnerable in Sheffield.
“It certainly wasn’t the usual way to spend a birthday but it was one I’ll never forget.”
