Hill rescue team called out after Peak District walkers stranded after dark

Mountain rescue volunteers were called out last night when a group of workers got lost after dark in the hills of the Peak District.

The group of three had been out walking on Saturday – but found themselves stricken when night fell, leaving them to call the police for help.

Edale Mountain Rescue was asked to help by Derbyshire Police after the worried walkers had phoned them for help from Kinder Scout.

A spokesman for the rescue team said: “After talking with one of the party it was established that they thought that they were in the Ringing Roger area above Edale village and with phone find technology they were further pin pointed in the Upper reaches of Golden Clough.

“They were in reasonably good spirits and sheltered from the wind so they elected to stay at that position while we deployed a small section to go up and locate them.

“After being given drinks and food plus some warm clothing and extra lighting, they were escorted a short distance across country before descending down the zig zag path via Heardmans Plantation and back to the Nags Head.”

He added the were all off the hill shortly after 1am this morning.

Edale Mountain Rescue Team operates in the Peak District National Park in Derbyshire and is one of the busiest Mountain Rescue teams in the country.

In 2019, Its volunteer team members were involved in a tota of 137 incidents throughout its operational area, which covers parts of Derbyshire and South Yorkshire.
