Hen project to reduce loneliness in Sheffield

Set up by charity Equal Arts, HenPower uses hen-keeping and creativity to tackle loneliness, reduce depression and improve people’s wellbeing.

It is also seeing benefits in dementia care settings, with staff reporting a reduction in the use of anti-psychotic medication.

Currently in more than 30 care homes in the North East, the award-winning £1m project is continuing its roll out and looking to launch in Sheffield.

The charity is looking for a HenPower Associate to coordinate the project at a number of care settings and venues.

Equal Arts director Douglas Hunter said: “What started as a pilot project in one home is now supporting hundreds of older people.

“HenPower gives people a role and responsibility. It builds relationships and moves away from passive care you so often see in care settings.

“It harnesses people’s imagination and interests to empower themselves.

“We are looking to take on someone who can help bring enthusiasm and creativity to residents and people living with dementia as we bring HenPower to Sheffield.”

Using hen-keeping as a catalyst, those living at care settings take part in artist-led creative activities and form partnerships with schools and their communities.

Equal Arts was awarded Big Lottery funding of £1m to roll HenPower out across the UK.

In 2015 it launched in London receiving support from London Mayor Boris Johnson.

There are also HenPower projects in Leeds, Yorkshire, Brighton and Southend.
