Helping the homeless

A WEEK-LONG awareness drive will highlight the plight of people affected by homelessness and poverty.

Staff from Barnsley’s housing advice service are setting up a station in Central Library, Shambles Street, next Wednesday to offer support for anyone concerned about their current housing situation, along with information on the rights of homeless people.

The event has been organised as part of national Poverty and Homelessness Awareness Week, which runs until Friday, February 1, when staff from a variety of organisations will be at the library with details of courses to help increase vocational skills and move-up the pay scale as a way to get out of the ‘poverty trap’.

Coun Jenny Platts, of Barnsley Council, said: “We are pleased to be supporting this important campaign.”
