THE Cutlers’ Hall, home of the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire, is staging a talk in support of Help for Heroes – a charity founded to raise money for armed services personnel wounded in battle. The theme will be the Zulu War battle of Rorke’s Drift, fought in January, 1879 when Jos B Jackson was Master Cutler, Edward Tozer was Lord Mayor of Sheffield and Harry Brealey, the inventor of stainless steel, was an eight-year-old schoolboy growing up in the city

The audience will hear tales of courage and honour displayed during the battle as told by Rob Caskie, senior guide and principal lecturer at the Fugitives Drift Heritage Lodge in the heart of the Zulu War Fields in South Africa.

“When Help for Heroes asked to use the Hall for this event, I had no hesitation in agreeing,” said the Master Cutler, Professor Bill Speirs. “Soldiers, sailors and airmen have, over many years, been prepared to risk life and limb to protect this nation, our values and beliefs. This charity does outstanding work for them and it deserves our support. I hope that people will come to this event in large numbers to see our wonderful Hall, attend what will be a very interesting talk and also to support this very worthwhile cause.”

The Cutlers’ Company is one of just eight venues across the UK to host this event which takes place on Monday June 20th at 7pm. Tickets cost £30 and can be purchased in advance. Light refreshments will be served.

Details of the event are at:

It is also possible to purchase tickets on the night but it would be appreciated if prior notice of attendance could be given to the Cutlers’ Company on 0114 272 8456.

There will also be the opportunity to participate in a raffle for a pair of original oil paintings depicting Rorkes Drift and Isandlwana; they will be prominently displayed on the evening and are valued at more than £8,000 the pair. Please note that this raffle is being held at every event. The winner will not be announced until the final one.

All the money raised will go to Help for Heroes: costs will be covered by the sponsors.
