Heavy rain tops up water levels

HEAVY rain has helped groundwater sources return to normal levels – and the region’s reservoirs are now more than 90 per cent full.

There were fears of drought in South Yorkshire but almost half a month’s rain fell in 12 hours over night on Wednesday.

Severn Trent Water, which serves south Sheffield, north Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, said: “Our groundwater sources take water from limestone aquifers.

“Groundwater levels are now around normal for the time of year.”
