Heavy police presence on Sheffield street as tree felling begins

Police officers are monitoring activity on another Sheffield street today as tree felling is carried out.

There is a heavy police presence on Thornsett Road, Nether Edge, around cordons put in place around trees earmarked for felling.

Protesters have gathered on the street to voice their concern at the felling, which is being carried out as part of a city wide road improvement programme.

Sheffield Council contractor Amey is removing dead or diseased trees and those causing damage or obstruction to roads and pavements.

Campaigners against the felling claim some healthy trees have and are due to be cut down.

They believe engineering solutions could be found to protect some of the trees.

Yesterday there were ugly scenes on Abbeydale Park Rise, Dore, when tree fellers moved in to cut down six trees which have been decorated with Christmas lights every year for the last three decades.
