Heart unit closure referred

Barnsley Council is to refer the decision to close the Leeds Children’s Heart Unit to the Secretary of State with the request he should consider whether it is in the best interests of local residents.

The decision to close the unit was taken last month and members of Barnsley Council’s Personal and Family Wellbeing Scrutiny Commission met yesterday.

The panel heard evidence of widespread concerns among senior clinicians in the region about the potential impact of the closure on the region and on the borough of Barnsley.

An official review concluded Leeds General Infirmary should stop surgery so care could be concentrated at fewer, larger sites.
