MUM-of-two Mary Batham-Tomkins was spurred into dieting when a fun family holiday turned to tears.
After getting on a log flume ride in Great Yarmouth 14 months ago, she suddenly realised her 19 stone frame simply would not fit inside.
The 41-year-old said: “It set off going and I suddenly realised I couldn’t fit in the log flume. I thought I was going to die of embarrassment.
“I laughed all the way around, trying to make it seem that I thought it was funny, then I got off and cried.
“I thought, ‘That’s it, that’s enough’.”
Just days later Mary, from Woodhouse, joined a Slimming World class in Handsworth.
And once her builder husband Malc saw how well she was losing weight, he followed suit a few months later.
Mary has now shed eight stone, and Malc nine - from his starting point of 25 stone.
This year they celebrated becoming the slimming club’s Couple of the Year 2012.
Mary said: “The difference it has made has been absolutely incredible.”
Romance used to mean nights in with a bucket of chicken or a greasy pizza. Now they are proving dieting together doesn’t have to be dull.
“We used to eat a hell of a lot of chips, every evening,” said Mary. “These days we still go out but instead of a KFC we might have a carvery. We’re just more careful in what we have.”
Malc, 42, added: “We didn’t suddenly wake up with a weight problem - like most people our weight crept up gradually.
“But on that holiday we both realised our size had reached a point where it was making us unhappy and we knew it would affect our health.”
The Handsworth Slimming World group meets on Mondays at 5pm and 7pm at Ballifield Primary School.
