WITH just days to go before the St Luke’s Hospice Starlight Walk, organisers have issued a rallying call to help smash last year’s fundraising total.
So far, 943 people have signed up to take part in the 5k walk, which takes place on Saturday.
But there is still time for more people to sign up to help organisers reach the 1,000 mark for participants.
Walkers are also being encouraged to turn up and register on the night, before the walk from Endcliffe Park to Forge Dam gets under way at 8.45pm, with music and live entertainment in the park from 4pm onwards.
Last year, the event raised £65,000 towards helping the hospice in Whirlow deliver vital end-of-life care for thousands of people across the city.
It is hoped this year – the second year the event has been run – will provide an even bigger boost, with St Luke’s setting a fundraising target of around £80,000.
A spokesman for St Luke’s Hospice said: “We are confident we can reach 1,000.
“Last year we got just under that, so the fact we are nearly there with entries still coming in and being collated is fantastic news.
“We’ll be accepting entries right up until the last minute. We are hoping to beat last year’s records. We need £4 million every year to keep St Luke’s going and we hope this walk will become a regular fixture.
“Everybody enjoyed it so much, it is a wonderful chance for people to get together to remember and celebrate the life of someone who has been cared for at St Luke’s, or those who don’t have personal reasons but just want to support us.
“It is overwhelming and uplifting just how much support St Luke’s gets from people across Sheffield. Without them, there would be no St Luke’s.”
