Donations are coming in to help make Chesterfield’s cancer centre dream a reality – but more of YOUR generous support is needed.

As many as 9,000 people are receiving cancer care in north and north east Derbyshire on any one day.

Now, for the first time, Chesterfield is in line for a specialist centre specifically designed to give the help people in our area need.

The new £8.9million cancer centre has just one aim – to transform the services offered to people facing the toughest battle of their life.

The scheme, which was granted planning permission in April, will see a purpose built facility which provides a single point of access to all appropriate assessment, treatment and support services.

The new centre will provide all outpatient chemotherapy and clinical haematology services in one place.

It will all be housed in a new building based at Chesterfield Royal Hospital and is due to open in the autumn of 2016.

It is a massive project with Macmillan Cancer Support working alongside the Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust to fund the new building – which will be named the Chesterfield Royal Macmillan Cancer Centre.

The total cost will be £8.9m.

The Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has already committed £6.4m.

Macmillan, with support from the Derbyshire Times, has launched a fundraising appeal for the remaining £2.5m needed.

At the minute, the outstanding staff at the Royal Hospital, no matter how hard they try, cannot always treat everyone.

Patients often need to travel further afield for treatment or be admitted to hospital overnight.

There is a lack of space which means patients suffer cramped conditions and it’s not possible for everyone with cancer to have their friends or family with them during their chemotherapy treatment.

The situation is so bad there isn’t even room for patients to receive treatment or information about their diagnosis in private.

At Chesterfield Royal Hospital there are already 15 Macmillan professionals including clinical nurse specialists.

Their expertise, innovative approach and history of successful partnerships with the public and private sectors puts the town in a unique position.

They understand what’s needed to create world-class cancer care.

And now they are working to deliver just that.
