Telling stories to battle dementia

Have your say

A NEW £8,000 research project is under way in Sheffield to help people with dementia tell their stories.

Jane McKeown, senior nurse at Sheffield Health and Social Care trust, has secured grants to find the most effective ways of using people’s life stories to help them cope with dementia.

Patients are helped to tell their stories, which are recorded and then used by staff and family carers to remind them about important events in their past.

Tales include significant life events, their interests and things they are proud of.

The study builds on Jane’s PhD thesis which explored the use of life-story work in dementia care.

She said: “The purpose of this work is to find out what is useful, what is helpful in getting life-story work used in care practice.”
