Couch potatoes in Sheffield are being encouraged to pull on their running shoes and head outdoors to get fit in 2015.
Many people start January with the best intentions of shaping-up by joining a gym, but studies have shown that those who sign-up will have stopped attending by February.
To save money and shed the pounds, organisers of the Great Yorkshire Run in Sheffield suggest those looking to improve their fitness should take up running.
And to help people take their first steps, the running event experts have provided the following tips:
n Think of the benefits.
Running is the perfect way to burn calories and it’s also good for your joints;
n Set yourself a goal.
Enter a running event such as the Great Yorkshire Run and use your training to work towards a personal-best time, and you could raise money for charity along the way.
n Start off small.
Go out once or twice a week and do a few miles of running and/or walking each time.
n Find a great location.
Spend time researching new areas and keep it interesting by mixing up your routes.
n Stay motivated.
One of the best ways to keep it up is to get a running buddy or join a running club.
