A South Yorkshire MP has joined the organ donor register and encouraged others to sign up.
Sarah Champion, Labour MP for Rotherham, said she is concerned more than 18,000 people in the town are waiting for an organ transplant.
She signed up after being contacted by nine-year-old Luis Mitchell-Goncalves, who successfully underwent a kidney transplant, and urged all MPs to be registered.
Sarah said she was ‘very keen to set an example and registered to be a donor in order to encourage other people to do likewise in order to help as many sick people as possible undergo the transplant they desperately need’.
She is now backing a campaign called Transplant 2013 which aims to dramatically increase the number of donations.
Former Bluebell Wood Hospice boss Ms Champion said: “There has been a 47 per cent increase in the number of deceased donors, however, the shocking news is that there has been no overall improvement in the rate of consent for people to donate their organs.”
