Love was in the air as couples took a trip down memory lane to remember the day they became man and wife.

St Mary’s Church in Handsworth welcomed 13 couples who had their weddings at the church back to celebrate their love in a special ceremony.

Sandra Cressey – the daughter of former city council leader Sir Ron Ironmonger – not only relived her wedding day to husband Derek 51 years ago but also her childhood after meeting an old neighbour at the event.

The 71-year-old grandmother, of Stannington, said: “It was a lovely night.

“When we were standing together for pictures I looked at another couple and recognised the lady as Kath Padley, who used to live across the road from me on Chestnut Avenue in Handsworth.

“We got chatting and it was great to bring back all the memories.”

Sweethearts Wendy and Don Hudson were marking 53 years of happy matrimony, while a set of newlyweds had just reached their one-year anniversary.

All renewed their vows with Father Keith Johnson and shared photographs from their wedding albums.

Mum-of-three Helen Broomhead, who married husband Jon 13 years ago, said: “As we are both from Handsworth and my mum goes to the church our wedding was quite packed.

“It rained though so all the pictures were taken inside the church.

“We live in Silkstone near Barnsley now so it was my mum who told us about the ceremony.

“It was a really lovely night, especially when
you could look back to the day you were married
and see couples from all the different eras. We took our three daughters to show Father Keith the product of our marriage!”

Anne Palmer, secretary of the Parochial Church Council at St Mary’s on Handsworth Road, said: “She was sorry they couldn’t come down for the service but wished us all the best.

“We had a wonderful service, everyone enjoyed it and thanked us for putting it on.

“In total 36 people attended along with eight children and the longest married couple wed 58 years ago. We had a lovely two-tier heart shaped wedding cake provided by a member of our congregation and finished the celebrations off with a piece of cake, a glass of bubbly and a look at photographs from sepia through to colour.”
