A Sheffield swimmer is heading across the Pond to hone his talents at university as he targets a place at the Olympics.

Archie Mitchell, from Broomhill, has accepted an athletics scholarship at California Polytechnic State University.

The King Edward VII sixth-form student trains with the City of Sheffield Swim Squad at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre.

The 18-year-old is part of the British open water team, and won a silver medal in the junior final of the Commonwealth Games swimming trials in Glasgow earlier this year.

He also travelled to Hungary in September, to represent Great Britain in a world championship contest.

Archie will start at Cal Poly next year after finishing his A-levels – and is set to be a key member of the swimming team there.

He spent time at campuses thousands of miles apart, from Tennessee to Ohio, before choosing his university.

Archie said: “I can’t wait to start and to be able to train with such talented swimmers and coaches in such a beautiful, inspiring place.

“It is an opportunity that I’ve always dreamed of.”
