A magical torch-lit fundraising walk through a Sheffield wood is returning – backed by one of the city’s most famous names.

Athlete Jessica Ennis-Hill is supporting Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity’s Light The Night event, which takes place on September 28 in Ecclesall Woods.

The London 2012 Olympic gold medal-winning heptathlete is also offering walkers who raise the most sponsorship money the chance to have their photo taken with her on the night.

Now in its second year, Light The Night follows a 4.5km route, starting at 6.30pm at the Woodland Discovery Centre.

Participants are encouraged to bring torches to illuminate the dusk, while live music and entertainment will also be on offer.

Jessica, a patron of the cancer charity, will be attending to start the walk.

The 27-year-old, from Dore, said: “I’m proud to be part of such a fabulous event.

“I want to encourage as many people as possible to sign up for Light the Night and raise as much sponsorship as they can.

“Money raised will help make Weston Park Hospital an even more incredible place and we’d love you to help us beat last year’s total of £25,000.”

Sarah Cross, cancer charity fundraiser, said: “It is fantastic to have Jessica’s support.

“She’s an inspirational person, and we are delighted she is the figurehead for this year’s event.

“Light the Night will be a magical experience for everyone and will bring together many amazing people.”
