A police probe is under way into the death of a prisoner in a Sheffield police station cell.

The 42-year-old had been charged with shoplifting and was being held at Ecclesfield police station ahead of a hearing at Sheffield Magistrates Court yesterday.

But he was discovered unconscious in his cell yesterday morning and pronounced dead a short time later.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has been informed.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “Regular checks of the man were conducted overnight and yesterday morning. Shortly after 9am, officers discovered that the man was unconscious.

“Paramedics were immediately called and efforts were made by staff to provide first aid.

“The incident has been referred to the IPCC.”
