A Cystic Fibrosis patient will run the Yorkshire Half Marathon in Sheffield to inspire others with the condition to get fit and active.
Gabriella Ashcroft, aged 27, will raise money for Sheffield Hospitals Charity at the event next Sunday in support of the centre which provides her care at the Northern General.
The actress and drama teacher has to take about 30 tablets a day, undergo daily physio and use her nebuliser several times a day to keep her condition under control.
Although originally diagnosed when she was just four months old, last year Gabriella learned her lung function had reduced by 20 per cent.
She said: “Last year my health reached an all-time low. I refuse to let it beat me, I wanted to prove that with hard work and resilience you can come out the other side better.
“The CF Centre where I stay when admitted to hospital, and have done since I was 16, is a cause close to my heart. The staff are like my extended family. This is what you need when you can spend as much as three months of every year in hospital. CF is a massive part of my life but I’ll never let it define me.”
