People over the age of 65 are being invited to take part in free swimming and gym classes across Sheffield.

The initiative forms part of Silver Sunday, an annual day of free activities for older people which this year takes place on October 5.

Free entry for over-65s will be available at leisure centres operated by Sheffield International Venues (SIV) on behalf of Sheffield City Trust (SCT).

Jill Dentith, head of health at SCT, said: “This weekend, we’re encouraging people over 65 to try out the great facilities at our venues for free. All they have to do is turn up for either a swim, gym session or ice skate, no pre-booking is required.

“We receive great feedback from the over-65s who use our venues. Our staff are always on hand to give them the confidence and the support they need to enjoy the facilities.”

Free access to gyms and swimming pools will be available at Concord Sports Centre, Graves Tennis and Leisure Centre, Hillsborough Leisure Centre, Heeley Swimming Pool, Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, Springs Leisure Centre and Westfield Sports Centre. The English Institute of Sport Sheffield will offer free use of its gym.

Free ice skating lessons will also be available for over-65s at iceSheffield on October 6.
