Sheffield families got active and raised money for a heart research charity recently.

Old and young alike took part in the 2015 SUBWAY Helping Hearts Family 5K event at Endcliffe Park in aid of Heart Research UK.

Nearly 500 runners put on their trainers to get involved in the event which is in its third year.

Mark Honeywood, aged 39, from Nottinghamshire, and his two daughters Sariah, aged 8, and Aaliyah, aged 7, were inspired to take part in the event after the shock of losing his father Stephen to heart disease in April 2014.

Mark’s father had a close relationship with Mark’s two daughters, so his death had a huge impact on the whole family. Stephen had been trying to teach his granddaughters Turkish, having bought a holiday home in Turkey that the family would visit. They would call Stephen ‘Gule Gule’, meaning goodbye in Turkish.

Sariah and Aaliyah were also inspired to take part in the 5K event by their best friend, Martha, aged 8. Martha was diagnosed with coaracation of the aorta – a narrowing of the heart’s main artery - at just two weeks old, along with a number of other heart problems.

Mark said: “As soon as I told the girls about the event, they shouted out that they wanted to do it for Martha and Grandad. As a family, we try to eat healthily and exercise and I think it’s so important for children to run around outside instead of sitting in front of the TV. My girls are so keen to do the event and I am a very proud daddy.”

After the fun run, participants were greeted by their family and friends where they enjoyed a fun day out with a variety of free entertainment including a bouncy castle, face painting and a SUBWAY lunch.

The event was the eleventh of 12 that will take place up and down the country and the events are part of the SUBWAY brand’s efforts to inspire families to live healthier and more active lifestyles.

Roger Cusa, Head of Marketing for the SUBWAY brand in the UK said: “I am delighted that the eleventh event in our 2015 SUBWAY Helping Hearts Family 5K series was in Sheffield and that it was such a success.”
