A revamped labour ward is opening its doors to patients at Barnsley Hospital.

The seven-bedded, state of the art birthing centre will see its first babies born from Tuesday.

Three of the ward’s rooms contain pools as well as beds, giving more women the option of a water birth.

Calming decor, adjustable mood lighting and en-suite toilets and shower rooms are also provided, along with an assessment unit and a dedicated room for bereaved parents.

Sue Gibson, head of midwifery, said staff were ‘looking forward to the first arrival’.

“It is a bright, welcoming environment for women to give birth in,” she said.
