Research faces funding battle

SHEFFIELD University scientist Dr Marcello Rivolta highlighted the importance of funding work in groundbreaking stem cell research into deafness at a charity event in London for Deafness Research UK.

Dr Rivolta emphasised the huge potential that exists in stem cell biology but made clear that researchers in the UK still face difficulties in getting adequate funding, even for the highest quality work.

“Funding research into hearing loss is facing a particularly challenging time and research into hearing loss does not figure as highly as more high-profile conditions,” he said. “We know that as little as £1.50 a person is spent on deafness research compared to £50 a person for cardiovascular disease.”
