Pit disease killed OAP

A VERDICT of death from industrial disease has been recorded on a Doncaster man who spent almost 40 years in the mines.

Janis Kalvans was born in Latvia but came to Britain as a young man in 1948 and worked underground until the miners’ strike of 1984-85.

In the latter stages of his life the 87-year-old, who lived in Barnby Dun, suffered from pneumoconiosis and lung cancer, both of which affected his respiratory system.

A post-mortem examination confirmed the carcinoma in his lung, but it was not work related, said the pathologist.
