Work to provide state-of-the-art facilities for mums-to-be in Barnsley is set to get under way next month.
Health bosses at Barnsley Hospital have appointed Doncaster Road-based building firm CD Potter and Sons as the main contractor for a new £1.2 million birthing suite.
Barnsley was one of three South Yorkshire hospitals to be given a share of a £25m fund from the Department of Health to improve and upgrade maternity services around the country earlier this year.
The new birth ‘environment suite’ will boast three plumbed-in birthing pools, seven delivery suites with en-suite facilities, and a room to serve as a special suite for bereaved parents. Plans also include a room where partners can stay overnight.
Work is due to start in July and the projected finish date is January next year.
John Rhodes, head of capital projects at Barnsley Hospital, said: “The facilities will be fantastic.
“The improvements will help to bring the birthing environment up to the very high standard of clinical care that women in our maternity unit already receive.”
