A MAJOR national trial has been launched in Sheffield to test a procedure to treat piles painlessly.

Medics are testing a novel treatment called the haemorrhoidal artery ligation.

The treatment involves using a scanner to locate the blood supply to the haemorrhoids, before placing a stitch around each blood vessel to block the supply. Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and the University of Sheffield have been awarded £1 million funding for the trial by the National Institute for Health Research.
