A SCHOOLBOY aged just six took to the water in a charity swim in honour of his grandmother.

Jonathon Thurston, from Wombwell, Barnsley, completed an impressive 800 metres in the pool, raising cash for Diabetes UK, because his grandma Wendy has lived with the condition since she was a teenager.

His dad David has also signed up to the challenge and will be taking part in the Swim for All event in aid of the same charity on July 10.

The timing of the fundraisers is particularly poignant since Wendy’s health has deteriorated over the past year following a diabetes-related heart attack.

Jonathon’s mum Sarah - Wendy’s daughter - said: “The past year has been really tough for mum.

“Jonathon was determined to do the Swim for All with his dad but he was too young so he set himself his own challenge. I am so proud of him and my husband for what they are doing to help mum.”

Ann Rowe, Diabetes UK Northern and Yorkshire fundraising manager, said: “On behalf of everyone at Diabetes UK I would like to convey our congratulations to Jonathon and the best of luck to David.”
