Hospital worker Mathew heads to Afghanistan

A HOSPITAL worker will be swapping the wards for a war zone when he takes a dramatic career break.

Mathew Howe has worked as a supplies officer at Sheffield Children’s Hospital for more than four years but always dreamed of being in the Army. And now the 24-year-old is heading to Afghanistan with the Territorial Army.

Mathew said: “I tried to get in to the regular Army but I didn’t make the grade.

“That was a bit disheartening but then I thought about joining the TA and a colleague persuaded me to do so.”

His group meets twice a week at Manor Top for training exercises.

Mathew is also studying with them to become a vehicle mechanic.

He will be away from Sheffield for a year – leaving behind girlfriend Rachael Damms, also a TA member, home in Woodthorpe.

Mum Bridget Howe, a respiratory nurse at the trust, said: “I am excited in one way as it’s what he’s always wanted to do. But I will miss him terribly.”
