Festive partygoers urged to find out restaurant hygiene ratings

Have your say

DON’T let food poisoning ruin your Christmas celebrations.

That’s the message from Doncaster Council in the run-up to the festive season with a reminder that partygoers can check out restaurant hygiene ratings before booking in for a party.

Doncaster Council and the Food Standards Agency have joined forces to help family, friends or work colleagues when it comes to organising the annual Christmas get-together.

The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme - previously known as ‘Scores on the Doors’ - rates places on their hygiene standards, based on inspections carried out by Doncaster Council.

The national scheme, developed by the Food Standards Agency in partnership with local authorities, rates food outlets on a scale ranging from zero - where urgent improvement is necessary - to five, which is ranked as very good.

Coun Cynthia Ransome, Cabinet Member for Communities, Street Scene, Environmental Protection, Waste and Recycling, said: “If there’s one thing guaranteed to ruin your Christmas meal out with friends, family or colleagues, it’s a nasty bout of food poisoning.

“It makes sense to look before you book and check out the food hygiene rating. Businesses are encouraged to display a distinctive green and black rating sticker at their premises but you can also check the rating online.”

There is a free downloadable phone app as well as the website www.food.gov.uk/ratings where hotels, restaurants and pubs can all be checked for their hygiene standards.
