A SCHEME which uses exercise to improve the health and wellbeing of 1,500 patients with coronary heart disease, muscular skeletal disease and respiratory illness in Sheffield every year has been shortlisted for a national award.
Sheffield International Venues’ exercise referral scheme has been nominated in the best rehabilitation facility of the year category at the 2012 national fitness awards.
The 12-week exercise programme, which uses facilities including gyms and swimming pools, is designed for patients who have been referred by their GP or health professional for a variety of conditions, including diabetes, cardiac rehabilitation and asthma.
In 2012, in a bid to improve the health of the city, the scheme was expanded to four new SIV facilities to become Sheffield’s biggest programme. It receives referrals from more than 40 surgeries.
