Figures ranking Sheffield as one of the worst places in the country for premature deaths are a ‘symptom of the north-south divide’, says the city council.

The number of early deaths in Sheffield per 100,000 people is 40 per cent higher than in affluent areas.

Coun Mary Lea, Sheffield Council cabinet member for adult social care, said: “Compared with other areas with similar-sized populations, we are doing really well - third-best out of 15 councils.

“We are committed to promoting good health in Sheffield.”
