A schoolgirl who launched a fundraising campaign while battling cancer has surpassed her target.
Laura Powell, from Balby, is undergoing treatment at Sheffield Children’s Hospital for a brain tumour while embarking on her charity mission.
The 10-year-old aimed to raise £5,800 for The Sick Children’s Trust, which organised for her parents Annette, 37, and Mark, 40, to stay with her in hospital while she underwent surgery to remove the tumour last November.
Now, following a cake sale at Woodfield Park Community Hall, Laura’s fundraising total stands at £8,000 - and she plans to carry on with her charity work.
Annette said: “The event was a huge success, I would estimate that there was over 300 people attend.
“When Laura decided that she wanted to do a cake sale, we never imagined anything of the scale which it was.
“Once we started putting things into place we were inundated with offers of support from local businesses and individuals.”
As well as the cake sale attractions included a visit by characters from Disney’s Frozen, a bouncy castle, facepainting, raffle and a tombola.
Annette added: “Laura enjoyed the tombola best, she prepared all the prizes, tickets and helped on the stall on the day.
“The highlight for me was seeing so many people taking time out of their day to show their support, We had friends, relatives and neighbours manning stalls.”
