Dog day for ace tennis player

HE might be a Wimbledon champion, but Sheffield’s Jonny Marray was no match for a giant canine.

Fresh from his win in the Men’s Doubles this summer, he took to the court for a game against Dignity Dog, the mascot of Sheffield’s St Luke’s Hospice.

Jonny played the canine at Hallamshire Tennis Club to mark his new role as a patron of the Whirlow hospice - and in a surprise twist, Dignity clinched victory.

But Jonny was not left downbeat.

He said: “St Luke’s is a cause that’s always been dear to our family.

“In fact, my mum Kath is a volunteer at the St Luke’s shop in Nether Edge and I’m delighted to have been invited to become a patron.”

Ged Carter, for St Luke’s, said: “We are delighted Jonny has found time to support St Luke’s.”
