Former England spinner John Emburey believes that exposure to the sun while playing cricket may have contributed to him suffering from skin cancer.

The 61-year-old, who took 147 wickets in 64 Test matches for his country, has undergone surgery to treat the condition and admits he was not aware of the dangers of exposure to excessive sun during his playing career.

“It’s the result of playing cricket for so many years, not wearing a hat and not wearing sun cream,” he told The Sun.

“When I played, there wasn’t the same awareness of how much damage the sun can cause as there is now.”

He added of his condition: “It isn’t the most aggressive form or life-threatening.

“They say it can be eliminated through surgery and there might not be a scar.”
