A SHEFFIELD lawyer has shared his fears over the potential for more accidents at work because of cuts to key government safety departments.

David Urpeth, an accident and illness lawyer at Irwin Mitchell, is speaking out on Workers’ Memorial Day today - urging for more support for employees and their families. Although the true impact of the cuts to the Health and Safety Executive and Environmental Health departments remains to be seen, he is worried that progress made in recent years could be halted.

Mr Urpeth said: “Any loss of life as a result of negligence is simply unacceptable and on Worker’s Memorial Day it emphasises the importance of treating health and safety as a top priority,” adding that self-regulation will “never be good enough”.
