Public health bosses in Sheffield have signed a declaration committing to tackling the harm caused by smoking.

Sheffield Council has added its name to the local government declaration on tobacco control, which includes a specific duty to protect policies from influence by tobacco firms.

Leader Coun Julie Dore said: “This is an issue I am passionate about. We are committed to working in partnership to help those who want to stop smoking, and to improve the health and quality of life of people in our city. I would like to see action to take forward the idea of plain cigarette packaging.”

City leaders have also welcomed the prospect of new legislation which would make it illegal to light up in a family car. MPs are set to vote on the issue this week.
