Children’s eye care improves

YOUNGSTERS in Sheffield are getting quicker access to eye experts thanks to a new scheme for reception age children.

Young pupils in their first year at school are having their eyes screened by orthoptists from Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

Previously, vision was checked by school nurses who referred children to hospital for further tests if needed - but now orthoptists are going straight into schools to carry out the tests.

Shirley Blundell, a community optometrist, said: “The reason this scheme has worked so well is down to there being such a great eye care team in Sheffield.

“Sheffield is one of only a few cities to have taken national recommendations from the National Screening Committee and implemented this programme.”
