PATIENTS in Rotherham needing emergency dental appointments will be asked to call a new telephone number from next week as the service transfers from NHS Rotherham to the Dental Access Centre.

Patients who are suffering dental trauma, such as swelling, persistent bleeding or uncontrollable pain should contact their own dentist in the first instance.

However, if they do not have a dentist or if they cannot get an appointment, they should ring the centre on 0845 155 0845.

If appropriate, they will be offered an appointment with either a Rotherham dentist or at the centre at either Mexborough or Doncaster.

The service operates Monday to Friday between 9am and 9.30pm and on weekends and bank holidays between 12.30pm and 5pm.

The booking of emergency dental appointments has been provided for several years by the Patient Advice and Liaison Service staff at the Health Advice Centre at NHS Rotherham.

However, now patients who call the number for the emergency dental service will be forwarded to the Dental Access Centre.

Helen Wyatt, PALS Manager at NHS Rotherham, said: “We are transferring the service to the centre as we believe patients will receive a better service.

“Their need for an emergency appointment can be better assessed by trained dental staff, which will enable a better use of resources.

“We have dentists in Rotherham who are accepting new patients.

“I would advise any patient who does not have a regular dentist to get themselves on a list to ensure they receive regular check-ups.”
