Health risk follows latest in spate of tyre blazes

RESIDENTS were last night warned to keep their windows shut as fumes belched from a serious South Yorkshire tyre blaze fire.

The blaze was the latest in a spate of fires at a tyre dump at Radiance Road, Wheatley, Doncaster. Firefighters were still dampening down this morning.

The road was sealed off overnight amid fears there were gas canisters near the flames.

A fire service spokesman said the brigade had attended the site four or five times this year.

Members of the Strawberry Island boat club, whose barges and yachts are moored just yards away from the site of the blaze, said the fires were a regular occurrence.

The boat club’s steward Bob Gair said: “It’s a real risk to health, the fumes are disgusting.”
