His mother was reportedly among the hordes who descended on the Sheffield band's pop-up store in the city centre, which was set up to promote their new album Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino.

Amy Price tweeted how a group of women had turned up and were allowed to skip the queue after the shop opened on Friday.

Shaun Doane, of the Sheffield band Everly Pregnant Brothers, commented: "That's a Sheffield thing, no matter how famous you are your mam will still tell you that you're a scruffy get and tell you to get a shave and a haircut."

The story comes after a bizarre campaign was launched to 'banish the beard' sported by the Sheffield-born singer, which was derided as 'visually unappealing'.
