Having a ball with hot Currie

SOMETIMES, says Nigel Tomlinson, It's hard to explain to an American wife what being a football fan is all about.

Nigel has been a Blade since he saw Tony Currie become a Lane legend when he sat on the ball during the 5-0 win over Arsenal in 1973.

“It was my first game and the first time we had beaten them in 35 years and have been a fan since then and I go whenever I can. I also have a soft spot for Manchester United but I don’t think that will go down very well at the Lane.

“My dad used to take me to games sometimes but he was often too busy and I decided I was not going to be too busy to take my kids and that I would spend more time with them than he did with me

“But going to games takes up a lot of your time and I think me being a football fan is sometimes hard for an American wife to understand.

Nigel met his wife Kim when he was in Philadelphia on business. She was a dental nurse back then but now, amazingly, after spending ten years bringing up her two sons she runs the Halifax Bank Of Scotland account for Hays IT solutions.

“I am very lucky. My family and I have a wonderful home just outside of Doncaster,” said Nigel.

“Kim and I actually designed and helped build the house. We have a paddock and plenty of rolling countryside nearby. We are thinking of building another house where we are now and my ultimate dream would be to own a house in New England.”

The South Yorkshire countryside also allows Nigel the opportunity to clay pigeon shoot, ride his mountain bike and long walks with the family’s pet dog, a German Shepherd called Gerry.

“I love being out in the country and still being close to work,” he said.

“There are all sorts of animals in our garden, even a pair of mating barn Owls, it’s a joy to watch them.”
